The model for this painting is Julia Baird. Baird was the leading model for artists in America during the 1890s. She was painted by William Merritt Chase, Irvine Wiles, Thomas W. Dewing and served as the model for Augustus Saint-Gauden’s “Diana” in New York’s Central Park.

This painting was in the William T. Evans collection of American art (the largest collection of American Art before WWI).
